Geography

India stretches from the Himalayas in the north to the Indian Ocean in the south, bordered by Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. It spans 28 states and 8 union territories, each with its own distinct landscape, from deserts and plains to coastlines and mountain ranges.

People & Languages

Home to over 1.4 billion people, India is one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse nations on Earth. It has 22 officially recognized languages and hundreds more spoken regionally, with Hindi and English used for official communication at the national level.

History & Governance

India gained independence from British rule on 15 August 1947 and adopted its Constitution on 26 January 1950, becoming a sovereign, secular, democratic republic. It is governed as a federal parliamentary republic with New Delhi as its capital.

Culture

India's culture is one of the oldest in the world, shaped by millennia of history, religion, and tradition. It is the birthplace of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism, and is known globally for its festivals, cuisine, classical arts, and cinema.

State Emblem of India National Emblem
The State Emblem of India, adapted from the Lion Capital of Ashoka at Sarnath — four Asiatic lions standing back to back atop a circular abacus, with the motto "Satyameva Jayate" ("Truth Alone Triumphs") inscribed below. Adopted 26 January 1950.
