Briefing
Himachal Pradesh is a mountainous northern state known for hill stations such as Shimla, Manali, and Dharamshala, and for apple orchards that anchor its horticulture-based economy. It also draws on hydropower generation and adventure and pilgrimage tourism. The state has a largely rural population with a strong tradition of village-level (panchayat) governance.
