West Bengal lies in eastern India along the Bay of Bengal, and its capital Kolkata is a historic cultural and literary centre associated with Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. The state's economy includes jute and tea production, manufacturing, and the Sundarbans mangrove delta, a UNESCO World Heritage site shared with Bangladesh. The 2026 assembly election produced a historic change of government, ending the Trinamool Congress's 15-year tenure and bringing the Bharatiya Janata Party to power in the state for the first time.
